About the Arboretum

The "Tree Zoo" is an Arboretum of tropical and sub-tropical trees and palms, located in Deerfield Beach, Florida and supported by the Friends of the Deerfield Beach Arboretum. The Arboretum came into being in December of 1995 with a selection of 22 trees and palms and has grown to a near capacity of 325 species (not including native) of palms, tropical fruit trees, exotic flowering and canopy trees, bamboos and miscellaneous exotic trees from five continents. Arboretum Divisions

The entire park consists of approximately nine acres and is located to serve as a buffer between the commercial entities on Hillsboro Blvd. and the residential properties to the North. A lake and canal on two sides of the Arboretum serve as an additional boundary line between the private sector and the park. Facilities other than the Arboretum provided by Constitution Park include a children's playground, two tennis courts, a basketball court, a half-mile jogging trail, a PARS course, two picnic gazebos and an air-conditioned community center.

Horticultural displays are in evidence throughout the entire park. The divisions include:

    Flowering trees
    Palm trees
    Bamboo
    Tropical fruit trees
    Native canopy trees
    Exotic canopy trees
    Butterfly garden
    Wetlands demonstration area
    Spice and Herb Garden
    Children's Garden
    Orchid Display

Upcoming projects include:

    Japanese Garden
(look for the construction site of the azumaya just past the Torii Gate)

    Construction of the Landis Nursery

    The "Orchid Path"

    "Trail of Trees"

    Rainforest Collection

Most specimens are identified by a common name, horticultural species, origin and the donor which is located on a posted sign.Additional information on the individual species is available in the "Arboretum Guide" (printed pamphlet). There is a memorial tree program in effect and tree specimens are still available for those desiring to sponsor a tree as a Memorial Tree.

At present there is a planting of understory shrubs for the specimen trees in progress and eventually the entire park will consist of many individual gardens, some being installed by clubs and organizations or Deerfield volunteers.
